Tips for Staying Organized When Packing for a Big Move

No matter how many times you move, it never ceases to be an exhausting and difficult experience. Packing up your life and all your belongings can be a daunting task. But there are some things that can make the process easier. Here are some of our best tips for staying organized when packing for a big move.

Prepare a Schedule

Timing when to pack certain things can be tricky. You cannot pack away everything weeks in advance. You’ll inevitably need somethings. But you cannot wait until the night before to pack everything either. That will only prove to be overwhelming. A good way to deal with this dilemma is to create a schedule or timeline leading up to moving day. For example, you will not need things like decor and pictures, so packing away items like these early on can help get things out of the way. Dishes and personal care items, however, you will need until the day before a move. So, it is best to wait if possible before packing these things away. Just prioritize and catalog your belonging into categories of necessity and that will help you pack along your time frame.

Gather Packing Essentials

After you have a timeline prepared, you can start packing in increments, but in order to do that, you are going to need supplies. Boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and newspaper are all essential when it comes to packing. You can get all these things at your local big box store, but you can save a bit of money if you ask friends and family if they have any of these items first. Many people have all these things left over from moves of their own.

Create Groupings of Items

When packing, packing like items together can prove beneficial. Clearly mark boxes with what is inside so that you can easily find things when unpacking. Some people also find it helpful to use colored stickers on boxes. That way you can quickly see where a box needs to go in your new home. For example, green stickers can mean kitchen items, yellow stickers can mean master bedroom, and so forth. That way, at a glance, you can store boxes where they belong when moving in.

Mark Necessities

There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to find things you need when you need them. Which is exactly why it is a good idea to mark boxes with necessities in them. Toiletries, phone charges, and utensils are all going to be things that you will need almost immediately. Pack these kinds of items together and label the box “open first”.

And there you have it! Hopefully with these tips you can minimize the stress that inherently comes with packing for a big move.
