New Transitional Trends in Design

Wow! What a tremendous turnout for the first annual Spring Parade of Homes this year. We were thrilled to welcome over 500 visitors to the grand opening of our new Porches at Arbor Creek. We had such great feedback on the unique style and design of the homes, we wanted to interview McCaleb Homes' Interior Designer, Terri McCaleb about the new design style changes she's seeing in the market today.

Terri says the newest trends she's seeing lately are in the color palette. There has been a shift from tans and yellows to cool and warm greys. The stained cabinets are being replaced by predominately white woodwork.

In the last three years, tile is getting lighter with a more contemporary look. Clean lines are replacing the rustic feel. Terri likes to incorporate design ideas with a little contemporary and natural products to still give it a warm feeling. She likes to call it a Transitional Design.

Her design advice is to keep the important areas such as tile and countertops neutral and add your color in wall paint or accessories. When the latest trend leaves, just repaint and replace accents pieces.

Terri plans to continue to design in a transitional format for the upcoming Bungalow and Porches homes. She loves the contemporary look and light and airy feel but not too contemporary where it is a sterile, uninviting home. Also, she leans toward natural tone on tone fabrics with pops of color and using tiles that have texture and some form of shine that you get with glass tiles. She suggests always mixing lots of texture and patterns to give interest. Most poeple tire of their homes because they get too caught up in everything matching. The eye needs stimulation with design.

Terri McCaleb graduated with a degree from OSU in housing design and has helped our customers design their dream homes for over 20 years. She has taught interior design at the college level but mostly enjoys working one-on-one with her customers, sharing her expertise to help them create their own personally-styled interior design.
